Chapter 2721: Chapter 2721: The Figure in the Painting
Footsteps sounded outside the door.
Nelson took out the only key and opened the door that only she could enter.
Pushing the door open, there was the portrait of the Southern Sea Hermit, hanging prominently in the center.
The room was small and very dark.
Nelson first took off her shoes, then knelt on the ground, inching her way in.
When she crawled to the portrait of the Southern Sea Hermit, she clasped her hands together, closed her eyes very reverently, and muttered incessantly.
Her voice was so low that it was unclear what she was saying.
After finishing, Nelson habitually continued to kowtow.
This was a habit.
When her mentor was alive, every time she came to this room to visit her mentor, she would do this.
She took off her shoes, then crawled here.
Kowtow, pay respects.
After doing these things, Nelson would usually leave and place some offerings.
But somehow, she felt a bit dizzy.
This dizziness wasn’t from any drug but felt like fatigue.
Nelson stood up, walked to a chair, and slowly sat down.
She rubbed her head and felt like she had fallen asleep.
As if she was asleep.
Yet as if she wasn’t.
In a daze, she heard footsteps.
Nelson suddenly awoke with a start, alertly asking, “Who!”
No one should be able to come in here.
Unlike other places, there was only one path, and the door was locked.
If the lock was broken, an alarm would go off.
Also, reliable people were stationed outside.
Plus, the surveillance covered everything without a blind spot.
How could there be footsteps under these circumstances?
“It’s me.”
A woman’s voice slowly came through.
Soon after.
The Southern Sea Hermit actually stepped out of the painting!
“Master…” Nelson’s eyes widened; she struggled to believe her mentor wasn’t dead?
No way!
The mentor was certainly dead!
Died in her arms!
Before dying, she handed the Double Dragon Jade Pendant to her.
What’s going on now?
Even though Nelson wished her mentor could come back to life, this was clearly impossible!
It couldn’t be done!
Her mentor was dead!
Dead for so long!
“No! You’re not my mentor, who are you?” Nelson retreated without hesitation and pressed the button!
This was the alarm button.
But oddly, the button didn’t respond at all.
Nelson was even more surprised.
This button was very well-hidden and couldn’t possibly be broken.
To avoid troubling Julius Reed, Nelson ensured every small detail was managed to perfection.
This alarm button, too.
It would alert others to rush here in an instant when necessary.
“Disciple, you still don’t believe?” The Southern Sea Hermit came down; the painting was just blank now.
“I don’t believe! My master is already dead!” Nelson shook her head: “Who are you? To sneak in here silently and imitate my master, you must not be ordinary. Just say it directly, what do you intend?”
The person in front had made meticulous efforts to come here.
Even impersonated her master; there must be a reason.
And what they sought, likely something extremely important.
“I really am your master; what must I say for you to believe?” The Southern Sea Hermit sighed and approached Nelson: “I concealed the truth from you as a last resort. Some things are safer if you don’t know; once implicated, you’re in danger.”
“Then tell me about my childhood.” Nelson asked, her eyes full of alertness.
This was natural.
“No, if you managed to get in, you naturally have the ability to hypnotize me. If I’m not mistaken, the dizziness I felt was surely from your hypnotic attempt.”
Nelson chuckled: “Such a clever trick, so we don’t need to discuss further. Either be straightforward, perhaps we can reach an agreement, or kill me, or control me.”
“But don’t forget, Julius Reed is right here. He’ll return tonight; if you dare to control me, you’d better kill him tonight while sharing the bed. Otherwise, you’ll meet a grisly end.”
Nelson wasn’t afraid; with a mocking smile, she said: “I can only say, you chose the wrong person. I, Nelson, have no regrets left; you can kill me if you wish.”
“Nelson!” The Southern Sea Hermit frowned: “Why won’t you believe, I only faked my death to avert disaster?”
“My master, the Southern Sea Hermit, would never stoop to such trickery. If she did, it would mean risking the lives of all the peers on the mountain, just to survive by stealth!”
“If that’s the case, I’d rather believe she’s dead!” Nelson interrupted: “I respect the mentor I knew, and that’s how I know she must be dead.”
“Nelson, I’m indeed not dead. If you’re willing to listen, I can explain everything now.” The Southern Sea Hermit looked resigned.
“Not listening!”
Nelson turned away, sneering: “Scheming opportunist. Now, you can kill me or let me go.”
“I never expected I’d raise such a fine disciple. Nelson, now I’ll prove it to you!” The Southern Sea Hermit took a deep breath and swiftly delivered a mysterious martial palm strike!
“You know the move, yet not completely. If I controlled your mind, you wouldn’t know it. If I’m not the Southern Sea Hermit, how could I use this unique technique?”
The Southern Sea Hermit moved to face Nelson, gazing into her eyes: “Master is dead, yet not dead. My residual spirit has been by your side. Luckily you built this room for me, allowing me to come here, waiting for the opportunity.”
“Why not reveal yourself sooner? This room’s been here so long, why not show up?”
Nelson countered.
“Answer me.”
“Because I was waiting for a chance, a turning point!” The Southern Sea Hermit pointed to the ground: “Only when that chance arose could I appear. Do you know what the Double Dragon Jade Pendant truly is?”
“Just a jade pendant.” Nelson snorted: “What could it be?”
“Dear disciple, you still won’t be truthful. I know you avenged my death, even killed so many. But when I truly appear, you no longer believe.”
The Southern Sea Hermit shook her head, full of resignation and a wry smile.
“The Double Dragon Jade Pendant is both heaven and hell. It holds what you desire and what you’ll inevitably lose.” She extended her hand, revealing the Double Dragon Jade Pendant in her palm!
“Fake.” Nelson squinted: “That item is with Julius Reed. In all the world, I truly don’t know who could take it from him.”
Though surprised, Nelson knew the best decision now was to believe nothing, accept nothing.
The state of mind shapes reality.
Everything is a deception.
