Chapter 664: Chapter 226: The Predicament of Stone Province, Cruel Reality!
The clouds drifted across the sky, covering the already sparse moonlight intermittently.
Only a few strands of faint light fell on the river, swaying with the waves.
The three of them arrived at the riverbank. The flow of the White Water River was even swifter than during the day. The waves crashed against the banks, spraying fine droplets that shimmered with a faint silver light in the night.
Perhaps because they had already familiarized themselves with the risks beneath the river, they no longer feared the unknown sources of infection.
Cheng Ye looked at the river before him, feeling more at ease compared to before, and even felt a bit of the awe he had felt upon first seeing it.
Truly beautiful!
If he were to settle down in Dapo Town in the future, building a residence and office, he must be like Towns, the exquisite old man, and have the office face this White Water River, fitted with a massive floor-to-ceiling window from which one could see the vastness upstream and the winding downstream at a glance.
And place a walnut executive desk, similar to Towns’, so that when he’s tired from handling pioneering affairs, he could stand up, walk to the window, and gaze out at the rushing river in a daze.
How enjoyable would that be?
Just the thought of it uplifts the mood, easing the current tension somewhat.
“The Demon Eye Sponge is forty meters underwater here. I’ve already gone down with Inspector Luo several times during the day, causing him quite some trouble. If we can get through the night smoothly, we can start figuring out how to begin core containment tomorrow. We’re not far from victory…”
Cheng Ye explained as he pointed to the center of the river.
Wang Kang looked, his gaze drifting over the water before finally returning to the dock.
The Crab Fusion Body, having contributed four crab claw iron whips, was casually tossed into the water by Cheng Ye, drifting downstream.
But the battle’s remnants were irreparable: crushed bluestone slabs, smashed concrete walls, and the large bloodstains on the ground, along with two massive residual crab claws…

Wang Kang couldn’t help but click his tongue; it wasn’t hard to imagine the terrifying battle that had erupted today.
Yet, until the cognitive barrier was broken, he saw nothing, only hearing an explosion by the river, after which there was no other sound.
“Hmm, this was left by the Ghost Water Cave Crab Fusion Body before it died…”
Cheng Ye glanced at Luokuke as he spoke, the latter’s mouth twitching slightly.
Patrolling around the banks of the White Water River, perhaps due to the boost from infinite stamina, Wang Kang was no longer tired.
“I’ll go back to patrol the town, not to disturb you and Inspector Luo’s work.”
He knew his capabilities well; staying wouldn’t help, and might even be a burden, so he turned and left straightforwardly, walking lightly back towards the camp.
Watching Wang Kang’s figure disappear into the night, Cheng Ye and Luokuke strolled along the riverbank, eventually returning to the dock and sitting side by side on the steps leading into the water.
The river water slapped against the steps, the faintly cool mist forming a layer of white fog on their visors.
“If you’re tired, you can sleep a bit longer, taking turns on duty,” Cheng Ye turned to Luokuke, whose eyes were even more shadowed than his, clearly lacking any physical endurance.
“No need.” Luokuke shook his head. “As long as nothing happens from midnight to four in the morning, we can go back before dawn for a nap till ten, then prepare for containment. Time should be sufficient.”
After he spoke, the dock fell into silence.
The two of them exuded a sense of mental fatigue, with only the sound of rushing water and their breathing gently echoing in the night.
They sat for more than half an hour, and when the clock struck midnight, the two stood up, slowly patrolling the riverbank once more.
The Demon Eye Sponge seemed to have really given up any moves against Dapo Town; the river was calm, with no signs of any crab-men coming ashore.

When they sat back on the steps, Luokuke was so sleepy he was dozing off, ultimately breaking the silence first: “Inspector Cheng, after this mission in Dapo Town, are you going out for field assignment?”
“Yes, about time. Can’t stay in the intern phase forever.” Cheng Ye nodded. “Why, any good advice from Inspector Luo?”
“Advice might be too much; I’m just a third-stage inspector. In terms of Wilderness familiarity, surely nothing compared to Inspector Liu Bi.”
Luokuke chuckled, his tone lightening. “However, Inspector Liu hasn’t gone on field assignment for the past few years, so he might not be very familiar with the recent changes in the Wilderness. From the 29th year of the New Era to last year, I spent five years out on missions, so I might be more familiar with the situation in the surrounding provinces.”
“Feel free to speak, Inspector Luo.” Cheng Ye sat up straighter, his tone serious. “I’m not very familiar with the Wilderness; the location for my first field assignment hasn’t been decided yet, so I’d like to hear your thoughts.”
It was something to do anyway.
Sitting idly here was really boring, so having a deep discussion with a third-stage inspector was a good opportunity.
“Well, the intern inspector’s field assignment range is limited; you can only choose among the provinces adjacent to Stone Province.”
Luokuke put away his smile, his tone becoming more solemn. “Let’s start with Sea Province, our frequently interacted province in the past. It’s completely declined now. Around the 25th year of the New Era, Sea Province’s tropical climate started becoming more extreme, with summer temperatures steadily at about 50 degrees, reaching close to 60 degrees during the hottest days, making it unsuitable for human habitation. Only a few large shelter cities remain, reluctant to abandon Sea Province’s vast aquatic resources.”
“60 Degrees…” Cheng Ye couldn’t help but click his tongue.
Such temperatures far exceed human endurance limits, especially in outdoor activities. Without top-notch heat-proof equipment, one could be dehydrated and unconscious in less than half an hour.
